Gallery of Autumn Leaves
November portrait of
Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea'
This prickly barberry shrub is already
purple-leafed, then in autumn it turns a brilliant red.
This October photo (2003) shows some of the
deepening colors of the leaves together with some
of the tiny teardrop berries.
This shot taken later in October shows more of the
leaves at theinterior of the shrub where less sun reaches.
These have turned golden, which color is not present
every year, there being considerable variation annually
as to what what leaves will do color-wise.
Even after winter leaf-fall the shrub will have
many of it's tiny raindrop berries which
last through much of winter.
This shows the leaves in November (2002),
red with white stripiness. Some of the
small leaves are beginning to fall, revealing the
stickery barbs on reddish twigs,
still thinly decorated with the tiny berries.
