In October (2008) Bailey, a chihuahua of Poole, Dorset, proved his will to live after he fell through a ten foot hole into an abandoned WWII air raid shelter.
He was trapped for two weeks while his owner Olivia Wilkes searched, going door to door and handing out leaflets. Finally someone overheard distant whimpering for help, and followed the sound to its source: a hole in the ground.
Wilkes was called to the sceeene. She said, "I couldn't believe it. I looked down and there he was. He was fine but a bit skinny. It's incredible he survived for so long. The vet said he must have drunk rainwater and ate insects." Veterinarian Graham Smith said, "Bailey wouldn't have lasted longer than a couple more days."
