Azalea & Rhododendron Blossoms Gallery
Rhododendron x prinophyllum 'Apricot Surprise'
Here's a May Day portrait of the colorfully matured buds
of 'Apricot Suprise' deciduous azalea.
In a very few days the spicy-scented blossoms
are opening all over the shrub.
'Apricot Surprise' is one of University of Minnesota
Agricultural Experimental Station's "Northern Lights" series,
"Northern" because they are very cold-hardy extending azalea
gardening further north, & "Lights" because
the series is notably floriferous.
The individual trumpet flowers for 'Apricot Surprise' are smaller than
for most deciduous azaleas, & smaller even than other shrubs in
the "Northern Lights" series. 'Apricot Surprise' is also more strongly
redolent than other of the "Northern Lights" series.
This photo is from June 2003;
the others above are from May 2004.
