Gallery of Winter Berries
Portraits of
Callicarpa bodinieri var giraldi "Profusion"
"Profusian" Beautyberry has the most striking
neon violet berries that show best after leaf-fall,
leaving only the berries contrasting its grey branches,
as shown on this December (2002) branch.
In early Autumn, as shown in the September (2003) portrait,
the fruits are green & thick upon the branches,
& the leaves have not yet begun to turn.
In October the green berries are turning a lovely purple hue,
but are still some while from the neon violet of winter.
The beauty berries have gained their signature coloration
in early November, & will transiently share the limbs
with green then yellow leaves; by November's end or sooner
the leaves will all have dropped leaving the startling image
of neon fruit on grey twigs.
Here we are back to December (2003). When at long last
the leaves turn brown, they soon thereafter drop to the ground,
leaving behind the striking neon-violet berries
to dominate grey branches for the whole of winter.
